The First year students are divided into four or five groups.

There are two types of subjects: Core subjects and Optional Subjects.

Core Subjects

English, Maths, Irish, Science, C.S.P.E., S.P.H.E, History, Geography, Religion, P.E, German

Optional Subjects

Woodwork, Business Studies, Technical Graphics, Art, Metalwork Home Economics

 

Subject
Teachers

Students have a different teacher for most subjects. This is one of the most obvious differences between primary and post primary.

This is the teacher who has responsibility for one particular class. This teacher has a Pastoral Care class with his/her class once a week.

This teacher is also informed if there are any problems and might contact home if the need arises.

Contact should be made with the class teacher if a parent wishes to inform the school on any issue relating to their child.

Year Head

The Year Head, has overall responsibility for First years. Serious disciplinary matters are referred to the Year Head who works closely with class teachers.

 

Assembly

The Year Head holds Assembly for 1st Year students in the P.E hall once a week – Friday mornings at 8.55 am SHARP.

The focus is on motivating the entire year group to achieve their full potential. Issues around discipline, school rules, punctuality, attendance, homework, study, school activities etc., are all dealt with at assembly.

First year students are assessed in the month of October in all subjects. This is useful in monitoring his/her progress. It will be followed by more assessment at Christmas. The results of the Christmas Exams are sent home in January.

The school day begins at 8.55 am. Punctuality is so important. Students are expected to attend on all school days. If a student is unable to attend due to illness or for some other important reason the school must be informed by a note in the journal.

Procedures are in place for a student having to leave the school for an appointment during the school day. These are:

A note in the journal for the class teacher / year head.

A signed permission slip available from the office signed by class teacher/year head and student.

Signing a book in the office in the office, giving time of departure.

Please Note
Students arriving late in the morning must sign the late in book at the office.

 

Wednesday Afternoon

Classes at St Colman’s finish each Wednesday at 1.10 pm. 

There are a number of activities available on Wednesday afternoon from 1.45 pm to 3.36 pm such as soccer training, climbing wall, computer club & study.

Only students involved in an activity are in school on Wednesday afternoons.

 

Homework and Homework Journal

All homework must be recorded in the students journal. Parents are asked to check the students journal each evening. In this way, parents can monitor their child’s work and acknowledge any notes that may be written to them by a teacher. All homework must be done on the day it is given. Students are expected to have all their books, copies and materials for each class.

Supervised study is available for 1st and 2nd years. A positive, encouraging learning environment is provided on

Students get a snack and are allowed monitored use of computers to enhance computer skills, (approx 20 mins)

Uniform

The full school uniform must be worn at all times.

The school tracksuit can only be worn for P.E class. 

The school uniform and tracksuit are supplied by Hydes, Midleton and Euroman, Midleton.

 

Book
Scheme

There are two Book Schemes operating in the school. The scheme run by The Parents Association involves a payment.

The second scheme is run by Mr G. O'Connor and does not involve a payment.

 

Annual
Award Night

This ceremony gives us an opportunity to mark in a formal way the achievement of excellence by our students in a wide variety of activities. It usually takes place in October.
